Monsignor John Dimech

1922-2009

It is with much regret and sorrowing hearts that we look back on the loss of Monsignor Dimech. Appointed by the Prelate of the Order Principal Chaplain of MASMOM, he took his duties seriously and performed them with true Christian fortitude. His availability, charity and concern are well known to all members of the Malta Association. His death is a great loss to one and all.

Dun Gwann, as we all knew him, was an historian whose publications have served the Order he loved so well. His sermons were full of the enthusiasm of holiness. He emphasised the proper goals of the Order and prepared us, and separately, those in Obedience, to face our responsibilities towards the poor, the sick and the lukewarm in faith. His smile was comfort. He wore his high insignia not with the pride of vanity, but with the assurance he radiated and the commitment he felt to the consecration of his endeavours to the cause of our holy Order.

On the recommendation of Mgr Michael Gonzi Archbishop of Malta, Mgr Dimech was admitted into the Order as a Magistral Chaplain on the 19th October 1972.

He was promoted to Conventual Chaplain ad honorem on the 19th February 1991 and, the following year, the Sovereign Council nominated him Principal Chaplain of the Maltese Association.

On the 25th June 2002, our Dun Gwann was elevated to the rank of Conventual Chaplain Grand Cross ad honorem. The Insignia was presented to Mgr Dimech by HMEH the Prince and Grand Master Frà Andrew Bertie in the presence of H.E. The President of the Maltese Association, Dr Philip Attard Montalto and the M.A.S.M.O.M. Council at Casa Lanfreducci in Valletta on the 2nd August 2002.

We shall remember him with affection. Lord grant him eternal rest.

The funeral shall take place on Friday 9th January in the afternoon. Solemn  Mass Praesente Cadavere presided by His Lordship Bishop Mario Grech, will be Concelebrated at St. George's Basilica in Gozo at 1600hrs.

Message from:

Ambassador Antonio Ganado and Mrs Ganado –

Ambassador George Gregory Buttigieg and Mrs Buttigieg

Both in Rome on ambassadorial duty:

It is with a sense of pain and of deep personal loss that all of us write on the death of our beloved senior conventual chaplain Mons Dimech. We send our official condolences to Mons. John’s family and to MASMOM.

The loss of Father John will be deeply felt at many levels and by many people, whose lives he touched and whom he brought closer to Lord Jesus. In Father John’s death we have all lost a chaplain, a confessor, a good friend and a spiritual leader.

Both of us, as Ambassadors of the Republic of Malta, humbly salute this man of God who gave so much to so many for so long.

May he rest in the arms of Jesus, whom he loved so much and to whom he led so many.

Funeral of Monsignor John Dimech

The Funeral Mass of our Principal Chaplain, Mgr John Dimech was held at St George’s Basilica in Victoria, Gozo.

The memorial service started with a procession by members of the Order and the clergy, from the Basilica to the church of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Palm Street, where the coffin had previously been brought from the Gozo General Hospital.

The chanting of the Office of the Dead was held in the Cappella Ardente.

At 15.30hrs the coffin was solemnly carried in procession to St George’s Basilica accompanied by the Canons of the Urban Collegiate and members of the Order.

The priests, alternating with the Basilica’s Schola Cantorum, sang the beautiful Miserere Psalm along the way through Republic Street, and the coffin reached the packed Basilica at around 3.45pm.

The Funeral Mass was presided by the Bishop of Gozo, HL Mgr Mario Grech; about 85 priests concelebrated. Amongst them were Archpriest Mgr Pawlu Cardona, Archpriest Emeritus Mgr Dr Joseph Farrugia and the Pro-Vicar Mgr Anton Gouder who represented HG Archbishop Paul Cremona.

In his homily, Bishop Grech spoke about the gospel which narrated the cure of the leper by Jesus himself. The Bishop drew a comparison between the leper’s cure and the charitable work that Dun Gwann was renowned for among all and sundry.

The Bishop mentioned Dun Gwann’s enthusiasm for the Order and his dedication to the poor and those in need; he praised his work with those who expressed their wish to convert to the Catholic faith. Mgr Dimech had also taught religious education to students even when he was in his eighties.

Relatives of the late Mgr Dimech delivered the liturgical readings, while members of the Order read the bidding prayers.

The Gozitan volunteers of MASMOM distributed souvenir cards of the funeral to the entire congregation.

Archpriest Emeritus Mgr Joseph Farrugia, a close friend of the Dimech family, read the eulogy.

Earthquake in Abruzzo

In the small hours of this morning an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit the Italian area of the Abruzzo, causing devastation and loss of life in many towns in the region. The earthquake hit around 70 miles (110 kilometres) northeast of Rome just after 3:30 a.m. local time. The epicentre was reported to be near the city of L'Aquila, population 70,000, in the mountainous Abruzzo region. The US Geological Survey put the quake's magnitude at 6.3; although Italian seismologists said it was 5.8. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi declared a state of emergency and cancelled a planned visit to Russia to focus on the crisis. He was reported to be planning to go to L'Aquila in person.

The Military Corps of the Italian Association of the Order of Malta has swung into action, arriving in L’Aquila at 6 a.m. with the first group of its doctors, ambulances, first aid equipment and rescue workers. Supplies of tents and a mobile hospital will arrive from Rome in the next few hours.

Local units of the Association’s emergency corps (CISOM), are already working on the ground in cooperation with the Italian civil protection and have organised teams from Abruzzo, the Marches, Florence and Umbria, who have provided ambulances, tents and sniffer dogs. The immediate emergency and first aid work is underway with the sniffer dogs to find the injured caught in the rubble, and with Order medical personnel to give first aid to the shocked victims and those made homeless.

Malteser International has immediately contacted the Italian Association and offered its assistance to cope with the aftermath of this earthquake. However, according to a first contact with Italy, external support should strictly only be activated on demand of ACISMOM, the Military Corps of the Italian Association of the Order of Malta which is providing efficient emergency relief on the ground since the early morning.

Our prayers are with the victims and their families.

Rome, 8/04/2009, EARTHQUAKE:

ASSISTANCE TO 1,000 DISPLACED PEOPLE

The Order of Malta’s Italian emergency corps (CISOM), with their medical personnel, rescue workers, specialised nurses, and volunteers, have been working in cooperation with the Italian Civil Protection non-stop since early Monday.

They are concentrating aid at the epicentre of the earthquake, Poggio di Roio, have set up a ‘tent city’ providing 700 beds for the homeless of the area, with another 275 beds in nearby San Felice d’Ocre. The Order’s two medical centres, on continuous duty, have treated over 150 patients to date.

Sniffer dogs save lives

Together with the National Fire Department, CISOM’s two trained sniffer dogs helped find survivors in L’Aquila: survivors were pulled out alive from the ruins yesterday evening. From today the team will provide over 2,000 meals every day for the foreseeable future .

The Maltese Association of the Order of Malta held its annual pilgrimage to Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary in Gozo on Saturday 30th May 2009.  Five motor coaches and 11 saloon cars with a total of 155 sick, elderly and disabled persons, MASMOM members, Volunteers Of The Order and other helpers travelled from Malta to Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary in Gozo, where they were joined by 30 sick, elderly and members of the Gozo Volunteer Group, making up a total of 185 persons (including vehicle drivers).

The weather was excellent, the sea was calm and the cruise across the channel was short and smooth. The Malta contingent arrived in two boats, almost prow to stern, and was escorted by two policemen on motorcycles to Ta’ Pinu.

The patients were expeditiously helped off the buses by the enthusiastic volunteers and were settled inside the Sanctuary in reasonable time.

Holy Mass was concelebrated by members of the Order H.L. Mgr. Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo, and Mgr. Lawrence Gatt, MASMOM Principal Chaplain, together with other priests participating as pilgrims.

Members of the Order read the Epistle and Prayers of the Faithful; the Bishop gave a most appropriate homily and MASMOM President Dr Alfred Caruana Galizia read the Order’s Prayer. Holy Communion was received by all those present.

At the end of the Mass there was benediction, the bishop approaching and blessing the congregation with the elevated Holy Host.

As in previous years, the Laudate Pueri Choir, under the direction of the Rev. Fr. George Frendo, enriched the ceremony with their music.

After the Church service, Our Lords the Sick were helped on to their respective transport vehicles and driven to this year’s lunch venue, Hotel Ta’ Cenc. Soft food was specially prepared for the pilgrims’ needs; it was joyfully and efficiently served by the helpers using the usual human chain method.

Above right: Max Cassar de Sain,  aged 6, is eagerly following in his grandparents' footsteps and was the youngest volunteer participating in the pilgrimage.

After lunch, the tables were swiftly cleared in the same way. During the meal, vintage guitar and accordion music with professional quality singing was provided by Censu Saliba, Spiro Cauchi, Spiro Sillato and Toni Formosa.

The spiritual and entertainment events were enjoyed by all and came to a happy conclusion by 15.00 hrs, when all vehicles set off under police escort to return to their points of origin.

Thanks are due to H.L. the Bishop of Gozo, the Clergy, The Rector of Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary, the Laudate Pueri Choir, the volunteer helpers and singers, the Gozo Channel Company, the police and the organizers for the repeated success of this annual commitment of  MASMOM.

ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE TO ST PAUL’S GROTTO

The Annual Pilgrimage of the Offering of Oil to St Paul’s Grotto, which dates back to 1960, was held today in Rabat.

During the 19th centenary celebrations of the shipwreck of St Paul in Malta, His Excellency the President of the British Association, Bailiff Robert Crichton-Stuart (maternal uncle to the late Grand Master Frà Andrew Bertie), donated a silver Votive Lamp representing an early 16th century carrack. The flame of the Lamp was to burn in perpetuity in the Grotto.

Different  Parishes of Malta provide the necessary Oil at the annual procession to the Grotto and this year the Parish Priest of Dingli, Fr Norman Zammit, presented the Oil for the lamp on behalp of his parishoners.

The Lamp was carried in procession  by members of the Order to St Paul’s Parish Church, where Holy Mass was celebrated by Mgr Lawrence Gatt, Principal chaplain Grand Cross ad honorem.

The Grand Master Unveils The Bertie Monument

Frà Andrew Bertie was at the helm of what is one of the oldest philanthropic institutions for the past twenty years. Frà Andrew's main objective was to stand by the precepts of our Order, to which he was  above all, passionately committed with a deep and profound dedication to Our Lords the Sick and the under privileged.   His unfaltering visits to the Sick in hospital and assisting the disabled during pilgrimages to Lourdes and Loreto  were a priority on his agenda. He tirelessly strove to modernise the structures and the organisation of the Order and vigorously established diplomatic relations  worldwide. He has been inspirational  to one and all.

A friend of Malta, his love for Malta and the Maltese peoples' affection for him  originated the inspiration to  this wonderful project, to erect a befitting marble lapidary in his memory.

The Present Grand Master, His Most Eminent Highness, Frà Matthew Festing flew purposely over to Malta to unveil the Bertie Monument.

The event started with a procession from Casa Lanfreducci to Our Lady of Victory Church in Valletta, where Holy Mass was celebrated in Latin by   the Principal Chaplain of the Maltese Association, The Very Revd  Mgr Lawrence Gatt,  Conventual Chaplain  Grand Cross  ''ad honorem ''.

Several Reverend Clergy Members of the Association concelebrated  in this special High Mass.

The church was  beautifully adorned and was decorated with an array of red and white flower  arrangements. The function  was  enthusiastically attended by most of the Maltese members of the Order .

Members from the Sovereign Council, other foreign distinguished guests and   Fra Andrew's brother Peregrine and his niece Caroline Carrington, travelled to Malta to join the local members to participate in this unique celebration.

The Laudate Pueri Choir from Gozo enthralled the congregation with their angelic voices singing along to enchanting joyous hymns.

After Mass, the members processed back to Casa Lanfreducci for de-robing.

The Grand Master is greeted by the Apolostic Nuncio,

Mgr Tomas Caputo on his return to Casa Lanfreducci

At 7.30pm the unveiling ceremony took place, in what is now called the Grand Master Bertie Room at Casa Lanfreducci.

HE Dr Alfred Caruana Galizia, President of the Maltese Association addressed the gathering.

In his response address, H.M.E.H. Prince and Grand Master Frà Matthew Festing besides praising his predecessor for his most valued works, added with a touch of humor  that he would like something similar someday.

The Very Revd Mgr Lawrence Gatt blessed the Marble Monument and the gathering present.

All the guests in Piazza Vitoria could follow the ceremony which was transmitted live on two large screens.

The Dowager Marchioness Vivien Cassar de Sain then presented the Grand Master with a memento of the occasion on behalf of all the members of the Maltese Association.

The  invitees  lined up to see the  Memorial  Monument  and  the  newly decorated rooms  which proudly exhibit  memorabilia of the Late Grand Master. A  selection of photographs of Frà Andrew and of the Maltese Association's Pilgrimages to Lourdes over the years were displayed on the walls together with a slide-show  presentation highlighting the Order in action today, through its charitable works, hospitaller activities and religious pilgrimages.

An open-air reception followed in the quaint and picturesque Piazza Vitoria.

The Memorial Monument is the brainchild of Marquis de Piro, the Chancellor of the Maltese Association, also a past close friend of Frà Andew. In fact, a few years ago, Frà Andrew Bertie was shown a draft copy of the lapida design in its initial stages but at the time he never imagined that it would materialise. Marquis de Piro's dream, way back in 2003 was to create a Monument in Memory of Frà Andrew Bertie. He had then commissioned the design of the lapida for its eventual erection in Malta.

The monument was designed by Capt. Adrian Strickland and Mr Ronald Pisani was the master craftsman who undertook the project. The necrology was written by Marquis de Piro.

This magnificent marble Bertie Monument now hangs proudly on the walls of Casa Lanfreducci, the Head Quarters of the Maltese Association of the Order of Malta. The Memorial will bear witness to the affection and respect which Grand Master Frà Andrew Bertie constantly enjoyed here in Malta and also internationally.

His Eminence Frà Festing’s short 24 hour visit to Malta will certainly go down in the History of the Maltese Association as a special, unique and distinctive occasion. He honoured and graced us with his presence and charming charisma. He gave us all a chance to meet him and welcome him on our little island which treasures memoirs of a 265 year old history of the Knights stay in Malta.

Last but not least, he commemorated his predecessor, the late Frà Andrew Bertie, as a gentleman who combined intelligence with dignity and authority, describing him also as a man who throughout the years built and maintained the Order's spiritual mission; our principle mission being the same since the tenth century - a service to the Poor and to Our Lords the Sick.

News From Gozo

In these last two weeks the Gozitan volunteers helped with the distribution of new clothes, shoes and games to needy families, orphanages and refugees.

Last week, a van loaded with goods was delivered to the Sisters of Mother Theresa in Cottonera, with the kind help of Mr Marco Attard. The Sisters thanked the relief group and said that all clothes are going to be utilized for children and social cases. Another lot of children’s clothes were distributed by a nurse to needy single mothers in Gozo.

On the 9th July, the Gozo Volunteers Group also participated in the Kercem feast and in the Mass for the elderly at St George’s Basilica, concelebrated by their Spiritual Director, Fr Geoffrey G Attard. The volunteers helped the wheelchair and most frail cases during the Mass and following reception.

Another load of men’s clothes was delivered on Saturday 11th July, 2009 to the Male Geriatric Ward of the Gozo General Hospital.

The Gozo Volunteers were involved with the transportation of elderly and disabled persons to the Victoria Seminary, for Mass for the English speaking Catholic Community.

On 14th July, Members of the Order of Malta sent supplies to Dar Merhba Bik, a home for battered wives and refugees, run by the Good Shepherd Nuns in Balzan. A Gozo Express Services truck helped in this initiative. Here one remembers that this religious order in Balzan, was well loved by our treasured Mgr John Dimech, who together with his assistant, visited the complex regularly.

A Night To Remember

Our FOTO ladies last night turned a military fort into an enchanted venue for their fund raising activity. The Palace Courtyard at Fort St Angelo in Birgu was the setting for the fund raising dinner organised by FOTO, that was open to MASMOM members and guests.

The Friends of the Order (FOTO), are a voluntary branch of the Maltese Association of the Order of Malta, consisting of the wives of members and also Dames.

The guests were treated to a welcome drink and assorted canapés on arrival. They made their way to the square in front of St Anne's Chapel where they could socialise and admire the wonderful panoramic night view of Valletta and the Three Cities.

The hundreds of fjaccoli burned brightly on the rooftops, filling the courtyard with their magical light.

At nine o'clock, the doors to the charming picturesque courtyard, with the magnificent facade of the old Palazzo, were opened and everybody made his way to the attractively planned setting with the smart tables and elegantly dressed up chairs.

After the serving of a scrumptious cold soup, the guests helped themselves to the lavish buffet. The diversity of the exquisite food was abundant and the wines flowed all night long.

Maryanne Pace, FOTO President, addressed the guests and explained FOTO’s mission and how the proceeds from this event will be utilised. She thanked the benefactors and all those who helped to make the evening a success.

HE Dr Caruana Galizia, MASMOM President, also addressed the assembly and praised the FOTO ladies for all the sterling work they do throughout the year.

HE Frà John E Critien helped the organisers to sell raffle tickets and even was the auctioneer for the silver articles and paintings that were donated to FOTO for this occasion. He made an excellent job and the bids exceeded the estimated prices of the lots.

The Banda Vittorjosana San Lawrenz provided the musical entertainment and some of the guests just had to get up and dance to their merry melodies.

A selection of desserts and fresh fruit in season, were also served. These were followed by petits fours and Illy coffee.

All the waiters kindly provided their service free of charge.

Most of those that attended this successful activity are already asking FOTO to consider making this a traditional annual FOTO event.

 STAGE IN LOURDES

For the second consecutive year, a group of ten members of various MASMOM organisations undertook  a stage with Hospitalité in Lourdes. Hospitalité is the organisation that manages the nine million or so visitors to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes each year.

The group was made up of members of the Order and members of the volunteer groups FOTO and VOTO, most of whom were undertaking their second stage.

This year the group went a few weeks earlier in the year than last year and so, they were all a lot busier,  whether working at the train station, working in the Acqueil Saint Frai or in the piscine, at the grotto or on duty during the various functions.  Visiting pilgrimages were larger and included many patients with serious conditions.  The ability of the Maltese to communicate well in several  languages, was  once again, a great asset.

Although all those doing stage attend the annual MASMOM pilgrimage to Lourdes in May of every year, stage is a very different experience and affords one the chance to get to know Lourdes from another angle, while appreciating all that goes into making it such a special place.   It is also a great pleasure to be able to contribute, in a small way, to the wonderful work of Hospitalite de Lourdes, without whom no pilgrimages could take place.

There is also a very special bonding as all eat, pray and many work together every day, sharing the many different experiences and supporting each other throughout.

The group's special thanks go to Fr. Savio Vella SDB, who celebrated Holy Mass for them every day as well as leading the Holy Rosary in the Grotto in the afternoon.

On a couple of happy occasions Neville and Liz Curmi joined the group for Holy Mass, as their stages overlapped by a couple of days. Also, some fifteen members of the Jaccarini family who were celebrating their parents/grandparents 50th wedding anniversary, likewise joined the group for Holy Mass.

All are looking forward to repeating the stage experience again next year, God willing!

The Maltese Association, in collaboration with the Ministry for the Elderly, and with the gracious permission of His Excellency the President of Malta and Mrs Abela, today held an afternoon picnic for the elderly within the grounds of the President’s summer residence.

Five hundred and fifty elderly persons from both Government and private homes for the aged, were invited to participate in this annual event.

The beautiful surroundings of Verdala, with the backdrop of the marvelous Buskett gardens, provided an ideal setting for the afternoon’s proceedings, which started at 4.00pm with the celebration of Holy Mass, concelebrated by the Principal Chaplain of MASMOM, the Very Rev. Mgr Lawrence Gatt.

The afternoon concluded with the serving of sandwiches and refreshments, together with cakes baked by the lady members themselves.

The President and Mrs Abela, together with the President of MASMOM – Dr Philip Farrugia Randon, spent the afternoon in conversation with many of the Association’s elderly guests.

MASMOM gratefully acknowledges the assistance of the various sponsors of the afternoon’s event, and is thankful to the Office of the President, the Ministry for the Elderly, and the staff at the various homes for the elderly, through the help of whom this event was made possible.

Maltese Missionary Appeals For Help As Hospital Loses Ambulance

A charity hospital in Guatemala that is sponsored mostly by Maltese donors has lost its only ambulance following an accident where a man lost his life and four other persons were injured.

The hospital, San Juan Bautista (St John the Baptist) was opened recently following years of hard work by the Maltese parish priest and missionary Fr Joe Camilleri originally of Xewkija, Gozo.

Fr Camilleri was appointed parish priest of Jalpatagua in 1994 and quickly realised the need for a small hospital since the closest such facility was 45 miles away.

The opening of San Juan Bautista Hospital gave the people of the region some badly-needed respite in a country which ranks amongst the world's worst for healthcare - a major reason for the high infant mortality rate and low life expectancy.

Its only ambulance was used round the clock until the morning of September 20 when an emergency ambulance transfer of a patient to the country's capital, Guatemala City, ended in disaster when the ambulance skidded off the road while it was raining. The patient, Jorge Carceres, was killed, and the ambulance became a total loss.

Fr Camilleri has called for donations to replace the ambulance as soon as possible, saying other lives could be lost if medical assistance did not reach patients on time.

Pilgrimage with the Statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague

This is within the ethos of chivalry of the SMOM, the philanthropy of which is not limited by colour, creed or nationality. The Association made this statement in resonance with all other associations of SMOM throughout the world and as a faithful reflection of the Christian values treasured by the Maltese people.

A Prayer to Blessed Gerard

Founder of our Order

O God, who exalted Blessed Gerard because of his care for the poor and the sick, and through him founded in Jerusalem the Order of St. John the Baptist, give us the grace of seeing, as he did, the image of your Son in our brothers and sisters. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
